Summary: | From July 1862 to November 1863, Crenshaw Hall was adjutant of the 2nd Battalion, Hilliard's Legion. In the letter he discusses upcoming troop movements and campaigns; his brother Bolling, who was wounded in battle; and clothing that he and his brothers need (he is sending his servant home to collect the items). He also mentions the use of the "furloughing system" to increase recruitment: "Bragg is doing all he can to increase his effective strength present using the furloughing system to aid him. - One order gives a furlough to any enlisted man of not more than 40 days who secures a recruit for his co - another just published gives one furlough for every increase of ten men present for duty (whether the increase be from the sick present recovering - the absent & deserters returning or recruits) In this way he tries to make it the interest of all privates to increase the strength of the army here. The first operates well the 2d not yet tested." A transcription is included. |
