In the letter he discusses his father's recent visit; clothing that he and another officer he need; the health of the soldiers; conditions in camp ("The men are on pretty short rations but are getting over the fatigue of the campaign and are in tolerable trim for another fight"); and a letter that he wants his father to circulate among friends in several Alabama counties. He also gives an account of an accident one of the men had: "One of my men had an unfortunate accident to happen to him last night. It was Thomas Davenport of Prattville. He was asleep with his loaded rifle resting on a bush by his side. In turning over his foot struck against the rifle and knocked it down, it was discharged and the ball took off two of his fingers."
