description During the Civil War, Alex served in the 2nd and 3rd Alabama Cavalry. In the letter he discusses fighting in the area ("A day without an artillery duel, is the exception, and not the rule"); news from Mobile regarding the fall of several Confederate forts there ("The fate of our homes now rests on the successful defence [sic] of Mobile"); and the unpredictable weather in camp. He gives his brother advice about real estate and his plans for military service: "I don't approve it...the money is an object with us. For unless you would like to join the infantry you will need all that you can get, to keep yourself mounted." A transcription is included.
