Summary: | During the Civil War, Semple served as a captain of an artillery battery organized in Montgomery (known as Semple's Battery). He was later appointed a major and transferred to Mobile. In the letter Semple asks Roy about the eligibility of an "unnaturalised foreigner" to serve as a substitute for one of the men ("a most excellent man and soldier, who has served faithfully & suffered by wounds & capture") under his command. In his reply on the back of the letter, Roy informs Semple that the proposed replacement "upon acquiring domicil [sic] or becoming naturalised [sic] - if over the conscript age - would become a legal subject for substitution." |
