description During the Civil War, Semple served as a captain of an artillery battery organized in Montgomery (known as Semple's Battery). He was later appointed a major and transferred to Mobile. In the letter he mentions that one man from his unit has returned to Alabama "for conscripts to fill up our Co. which is much reduced." He then discusses the weather; conditions in camp; the unlikelihood of his visiting home ("until peace comes, which seems as far off as ever"); the relative peace in the area; and a "disagreeable and inefficient" surgeon who has been stationed with him. A transcription is included.
