Summary:During the Civil War, Semple served as a captain of an artillery battery organized in Montgomery (known as Semple's Battery). He was later appointed a major and transferred to Mobile. In the letter he tells his wife that he has just received orders to leave, and he mentions that he is sending some of his possessions home. Semple assures his wife that he is well but worries about her: "Betty...tells me you are pining till you are thin - I hope to see you fat and saucy once more." A transcription is included.
