Summary: | At the start of the Civil War, Dent was a 1st lieutenant of the Eufaula Rifles, which became Company B of the 1st Alabama Infantry; he was eventually promoted to captain and commanded Dent's Battery (formerly Robertson's Battery). In the letter Dent discusses the Battle of Chickamauga, which he thinks "will be one of the severest and most decided of the whole war." He is pleased with his performance during the fight: "The company seem to be very proud of their captain and of course that pleases me very much - This you know is the first fight in which I have led them as commander and I think they have plenty of confidence in me now if they did not before - I have been complimented highly by some Genl officers and I think my Battery will be favorably mentioned in the official reports of the battle." He also mentions some of the things he gathered from the Yankee camp, as well as "a couple of balls one cut out of my horse & one out of my blankets which I want to send home as slight mementoes from my Yankee friends." A transcription is included. |
