At the start of the Civil War, Dent was a 1st lieutenant of the Eufaula Rifles, which became Company B of the 1st Alabama Infantry; he was eventually promoted to captain and commanded Dent's Battery (formerly Robertson's Battery). In the letter Young announces the birth of Dent's son: "I am happy to inform you that Anna had a fine boy last night. He was born 5 minutes after 10.o.clock and they are both doing well. Doct Baker said he was as large as his mother he is very large child and a half hour after he was born he was looking around him with his fist in his mouth." He also shares a report from an acquaintance, who said that in New York "they say that they are going to pull up every cotton stalk from the Potomac to Texas." A transcription is included. |
