Description
Summary:At the start of the Civil War, Dent was a 1st lieutenant of the Eufaula Rifles, which became Company B of the 1st Alabama Infantry; he was eventually promoted to captain and commanded Dent's Battery (formerly Robertson's Battery). In the letter Dent discusses activities in camp; civilians who have visited the fort ("They are troublesome enough and various enough to disturb the monotony of any place"); and possible troop movements and campaigns. He also describes his efforts to have the regiment transferred to a new location: "I have started a plan to have our regiment or our company...ordered to Virginia...The fact is I think we will have to remain here for the summer and I believe I would rather spend the summer in Virginia. It is more fashionable and nearer the mountains and springs you know...I would be perfectly delighted to go to Virginia. I believe Darling that the most of the fighting will be done there and I do want to be in it. I want a chance to thrash these - abolitionists...every one that I have spoken to on the subject is anxious for the change." A transcription is included.
