Summary: | The men were charged with abetting Samuel Nixon "in committing, a mayhem, by biting off a small part of one James A Moors left Ear." They were fined and sentenced to stand at the pillory. But the signers of the petition argue that they are innocent, and they ask the governor to pardon them: "...it appeared on trial that they have ever supported the character of good, peacible citizens and respected by al their neighbours and acquaintance that the mayhem was committed by one Samuel Nixon, on the 25th Day of December last at a Publick Gathering. We therefore recommend to your Excellency that they be severly pardoned so fare as respects the ignominious part of this punishment." Also given is a list of the men who served on the jury during the trial. A partial transcript is included. [Original spelling retained in excerpts. The men's names are written inconsistently in the three documents pertaining to this case; the spellings in the governor's statement (Q32523 - Q32524) are used in the subject headings listed below.] |
