description |
In the letter Hanes discusses petitions circulating in Washington County, regarding the proposed boundaries. Apparently, there are two petitions: one "for a devision of this county a cross the river" and another "for the devision by the river." Hamilton considers those advocating the former division to be acting "at the sacrifice of their own honour," and he argues for the latter option: "this will do well as a plea to argue the necessity of remaining the seat of justice, it will at once show that about this place principal among these people has no place." He suggests that Caller "better get the tax list to compare with this petition" to ensure that the signers are residents of the county. [Original spelling retained.] |
