Summary:During the Civil War, Jones served in Company G of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment; he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. When he wrote this letter, he and his regiment were about to travel by boat to Montgomery, on their way to Chattanooga, Tennessee. In the letter he describes an accident that took place on the train as the men traveled to Selma: "i will tell you of an awful curcumstance that happend as wee come a long on the cars Jaret Gray was on the top of the Cars an fell off when it was runing very vast an surposed it kiled him wee havant hurd from him yet." He also mentions how little mail he has received lately; he suspects that "our leters are destroid on the way or by the offisers." [Original spelling retained.]
