Summary:During the Civil War, Jones served in Company G of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment; he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. In the letter he discusses his "tolible good helth" after recovering from the mumps, and he describes recent Confederate losses and increasing desertions: "i her bad nuse on ever side a ginst us the men ar all willing to quit fighten thare a grate meney desurten from jonson armey an a heap a leaveing this plase tha are from 5 to 10 a...night tha have bin some 75 or a 100 left her for the last two weeks the most of thim is Mississippiens an some from all stats."
