Summary:During the Civil War, Jones served in Company G of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment; he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. He wrote the letter while his regiment was traveling by railroad from Tennessee, to Vicksburg, Mississippi. In it he describes his enjoyment of the trip: "I wish you was her with mee to take a pleasure ride I had rother ride ann cars than to do anything else." Jones also sends news of friends and family who are in the army, and he describes the spot on his arm where he was vaccinated for small pox ("the sore is larger than a half dollar raw as a peas of beef").
