Summary:During the Civil War, Jones served in Company G of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment; he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. In the letter he discusses recent troop movements and possible battles. He describes the damage done by Union troops in McMinnville ("burnt it up") and the efforts of the Confederate forces to "go up thare an whirp thim." Jones and his regiment stayed behind to stand guard, but he fears he will have to be in battle soon: "I am mity proud to get to stay her for I nuver want to go in ary nother fight wee may bee in it yet the hole armey is in a motion advancen on the Enemey."
