description During the Civil War, Jones served in Company G of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment; he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. In the letter he describes in great detail a battle he was recently in, probably the Battle of Murfreesboro: "i hav bin in one of the bigest batles that has bin faught it last a bout fourteen days...wee warnt a fighten all the time but wee was under the bum shells whitch was very dangers...i shot seven times i taken as good ame as i wood if i was agoing to shoot a squirl it twas an affful thing to widness." He also explains that he has lost his knapsack and all of this clothes. Jones is pessimistic about the outcome of the war, but he looks forward to returning to his family after is has ended: "i hope that i will get to go home before long i think that our side is a bout whirped tho i cant tell." He sends news of several friends or family members in the army, and he assures his wife that "none of us was ciled nor taken prisners." [Original spelling retained.]
