In the letter he explains that he has been ill with pneumonia ("new money"); he and several other soldiers had to leave his regiment while it was on the march. He is now in the hospital and would like to visit home, but he does not expect to get a furlough: "My love i cant tell you wher tha will send mee too tho i...expect tha will send mee on to the Redgiment as soon as i get able to march i hope tha will let mee go home a while but i fear tha wont for tha wont let now body go home with out tha hav some diseas very bad that wont get well soon." He also feels pessimistic about the outcome of the war: "i dont her now talk of peas at this time i fear that peas wont bee made in a long time it appears darker to mee than...in some time looks like it tont nuver bee made tell every body pearishes to death."
