Description
Summary:During the Civil War, Jones served in Company G of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment; he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. In the letter he discusses rumors that "tenn thousan of the yankeys come over to our side and giv up to us," and he mentions that it is difficult to get news because the telegraph manager is not allowed to repeat the messages he receives. He describes illness in the camp: "i hav bin a helping to dig a grave this morning...wee hav lost thirteen out of our Company and a heap sick at this time but all is a getting better now." Jones then asks his wife to send him new clothes. He also mentions that he received a new gun recently (though he still has not received any money) and tells of upcoming troop movements.
