Summary: | Lucy was the widow of naturalist John Audubon. In the letter she offers condolences after the death of Mary's husband, Edward, who was a close friend of the Audubon family. She had sent Mr. Harris some of her husband's drawings to repay a loan, and she mentions here that he had declared her debt to be paid: "With respect to the Pictures I can only my dear Mrs Harris tell you the last words of your dear husband to me when I sat at his bed side 'You need not have sent me the Otter the Birds were enough for what I had sent you therefore I consider the debt canceled." I will send you a proper reciept [sic] as soon as I can get one from Town. I mentioned to Mr Harris I felt some regret at parting with the Otter because I had no other painting left of my good husband." |
