Summary:During the Civil War, Jones served in Company G of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment; he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. In the letter he discusses news of mutual acquaintances; illness in the camp and among the family at home ("looks like tha ant now disease comes thriew the setlment but what you hav a potion of it"); payment he has just received; and rumors of upcoming troop movements. He also mentions that several men who were taken prisoner after the Battle of Murfreesboro have returned; they report that "the yanks ses that tha cant whirp us but that intend to starve us out."
