The meeting was led by Don Hallmark and featured the following speakers: Montgomery Mayor Earl James, Dr. Henry Lyon of Highland Avenue Baptist Church, Montgomery Citizens' Council Chairman Carl Herbert Lancaster, and Alabama Attorney General McDonald Gallion. According to the foreword, WHHY broadcast the meeting live on the radio and WMGY taped the meeting and played the tape several times on its station because of public demand. The group stated that the purpose of the meeting was to declare that their position was "legally and morally right;" to unveil the council's "permanent program for victory;" and to help the public recognize "the enemy and the enemy's goals." Much of the meeting focused on U. S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and the Freedom Riders, who had been attacked by a mob in Montgomery on May 20. Other topics covered in the speeches included the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE); Martin Luther King, Jr.; Dr. Walter Bergman, a CORE official in Detroit; and Wayne State University, which was represented as being a center for Communist activity in the U. S. Gallion's speech includes a copy of what he claims is a transcript of a May 15 phone call made by Robert Kennedy to George E. Cruit, manager of the Greyhound Bus terminal in Birmingham, Alabama. |
