description In the first letter, written July 11, 1830, Lewis discusses the conflict between Governor Gabriel Moore and Colonel John McKinley. McKinley allegedly did not support Moore's nephew for the post of U.S. marshal, and Lewis predicts that "this marshal's appointment will be an eternal barrier to any further political or personal friendship between them." Lewis also claims that he has been "authorized" to report that Moore does not intend to run against McKinley in the upcoming senate race. In the second letter, written May 21, 1831, Lewis encloses a copy of the first letter and gives Coffee "full permission to use it any manner you may see fit." He maintains that the document provides a fair summary of the conversation he had with Governor Moore shortly before writing it: "The letter having been penned in a few minutes after the interview refered [sic] to does not leave the slightest doubts in my mind, of its entire accuracy...nor do I believe that Messr Moore will pretend to deny them." Coffee probably asked for the letter because, contrary to his claim the previous summer, Moore did challenge McKinley in the election.
