Summary: | During the Civil War, Riggs served in Company G of the 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. In the letter he sends news that their father is sick at the hospital in Macon, Georgia. He also describes recent conflicts in the area ("on the 14 & 15 of May I was engaged in a very heavy battle and since that time has been under fire for nine days at a time") but admits that "we have been fighting and falling back so long that I don't pretend to keep up with every thing that transpires." Two men from his company were wounded during the fight and are now at the Madison Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama. Riggs asks his sister to visit the men and leave his new shoes with them to take back to camp; he also wants her to "carry the boys some thing nice to eat." |
