Summary:During the Civil War, Riggs served in Company G of the 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. In the letter he discusses his illness and describes recent events during the Confederate invasion of Kentucky: "I suppose you have all ready heard of the fight in Kentucky with Gen Kirby Smith and the enemy who was ten thousand strong General Smith killed two of the enemy gens and taken one a prisoner also captured three thousand prisoners Our forces is follering [sic] Buel [sic] up but it appears as if we can not ketch [sic] him we are expecting a general engagement every day with Buel but their [sic] is no telling what day we will meet." He also mentions meeting several soldiers from the Prattville Dragoons, including the man who was with their brother, Charlie, when he died of typhoid fever.
