In the letter he describes the bombardment of an English blockade runner by Union forces: "...English vessel run the blockade at Fort Morgan loaded with guns & munitions also coffee sugar & medicine the vessel ran a ground on Saturday night...we succeeded getting about half of the cargoe [sic] when the yankey's...commence bombarding her...we gave her up...I am so sorry we did not save the hole cargoe [sic] and the vessel The capt of the vessel says that he don't think it will be of much benefit to them for the machinery was... a new idie [sic] that he was certain there was not any more like the machinery on that vessel in the United States I do hope they can not work the machinery." He also discusses the possibility of transferring to a calvary unit and the settlement of his brother's estate. |
