Summary:During the Civil War, Riggs served in Company G of the 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. In the letter he discusses the recent death of his brother, Charlie, who had been sick with typhoid fever: "Oh when...I tink [sic] that my only Brother is no more to be seen on this earth it seem to me that all is gone...I use to look forward with great anticipations when we would be order away from Pensacola for I thought then I could see my Dear Brother but oh them expectations was all in vain...I do hope and pray that he was kindly treated while sick for his sufferings was great." He also mentions that his company will be leaving Florida soon, going first to Mobile, Alabama, and then to Corinth, Mississippi; he plans to send his winter clothes to Martha because "the summer we will be two [sic] warm for thick clothes."
