During the Mexican-American War, Moore organized and led the Eutaw Rangers, a group of volunteers from Greene County, Alabama. In the letter he describes the Battle of Vera Cruz, which resulted in the surrender of the city to American forces: "I am told great damage has been done to the city and over 600 have been killed - among them, I regret to say, were many women & children. On our side the loss has been but small...It is upon the whole a great achievement of our arms...It would not surprise me atall [sic] if this should lead to a peace very shortly." He mentions that the soldiers will be allowed to attend the formal surrender ceremony, and he discusses upcoming troop movements. |
