Description
Summary:These records consist of correspondence, affidavits, and petitions relating to requests for pardon, parole, and remission of fines for offenses such as gambling, assault, larceny, manslaughter, murder, and hog stealing. Among those seeking clemency are John M. Collins, James Howard (who had been convicted of manslaughter in the whipping death of an enslaved woman), William P. McGrew, James L. Roberts, John Simmons, Jonathan Stresser, and James Thompson. Of particular interest is the case of William Savage, who was convicted of manslaughter in the death of Joseph Morris; petitions sent to the governor on Savage's behalf note that he was the father and sole supporter of eleven children under the age of fifteen.
