description The Macon County Committee was created to study the possibility of abolishing the county or redrawing its boundary. In the first letter, written February 8, 1958, Gomillion asks for a chance to speak before the Committee on behalf of the citizens of Tuskegee. In the second letter, written February 10, 1958, Engelhardt gives the time and location of the next Committee meeting; Gomillion will be allowed to speak, but time may be limited because other business must also be discussed. In the third letter, written February 12, 1958, Gomillion thanks Engelhardt for the meeting information and promises to cooperate with the Committee's rules. In the last letter, written February 19, 1958, Gomillion thanks the Committee for allowing him to speak: "Many members of the Association have expressed the hope that you will consider seriously the suggestion that you not recommend reduction or destruction of Macon County, and that you give the citizens an opportunity to resolve their differences and to resume the cooperative process of building the county."
