The act attempts to protect the "Infant Colony" from disorder and idleness: "Whereas Drunkness and Debauchery in every Community tend very much to inervate [sic] the Constitutions of such unhappy persons as are addicted to those Vices, and when added to the extremities of heat and cold peculiar to this Climate destroy many Subjects that would otherwise be usefull [sic] to the Society in general and their own Family's [sic] in particular..."The legislation stipulates that workers will receive no wages if they are drunk; establishes a nine-hour work day (with monetary penalties for missing work); and gives guidelines for creating and fulfilling agreements between employers and workers. |
