description During the Mexican-American War, Moore organized and led the Eutaw Rangers, a group of volunteers from Greene County, Alabama. In the letter he expresses his happiness at learning of the birth of his daughter, and he tells of his desire to return home: "Words cannot express the satisfaction which this news afforded me...I sincerely trust that you and that dear unseen daughter may continue to do well until my return. Oh! what would I not give to clasp you to my bosom this very evening and look upon that dear child. Vain, foolish ambition! What is it worth! I feel almost like saying the same of patriotism. But the day will probably soon come when my course will be turned homeward - when peace will be restored, the war at an end and the past almost forgotten, the happiness will be so great of our meeting again. God speed the day! As I have ceased to...expect more active service I shall be rejoiced to hear of peace."
