Description
Summary:In the letter Mrs. Jones writes to an Alabama senator, urging him to endorse a bill that would require Bible reading in the state's public schools. She informs him that the Woman's Missionary Society of the Court Street Methodist Church is in full support of the legislation: "We appeal to you in the name of the motherhood of Alabama to vote for this bill in order that the youth of our State may gain a knowledge of the Bible at the same time he is acquiring an ordinary education. Ignorance of the Bible is a great reflection upon our people, and we hope the time will soon come when the Bible may be read in every school through out the State." Mrs. Jones was the wife of evangelist Bob Jones, who founded Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1927.
