description During the meeting the Board discussed a recent demonstration at the segregated Court House Restaurant in downtown Montgomery, which was led by students from Alabama State College. Dr. H. Councill Trenholm, president of the school, appeared before the Board. He agreed that the students should be reprimanded but asked for lenient punishment. He argued that they had been influenced by outside parties and assured the Board that he could handle any further situations on campus. Governor Patterson, however, "felt that the situation was much too tense and the danger of life and bloodshed too perilous to pass up lightly the matter of punishment of the participants." He recommended that the nine students who led the demonstration be expelled; that the other twenty students who participated be put on probation; and that the rest of the students at the college "be advised that they will be expected to behave themselves and obey the law and that any future conduct on their part which is in violation of the law or calculated to incite riots and disorders will result in their immediate dismissal from the school." The governor's suggestions were approved by the Board.
