The correspondence deals with a wide variety of topics such as state's financial situation; banking; river and harbor navigation; publications from other states; the militia and arms supplies; salt springs; and university lands. Correspondents include John William Walker and William Rufus King, U.S. senators; William Perry, surveyor of Alabama rivers; Jesse Beene, state agent for the leasing of salt springs in Monroe; and several financial institutions (the Planters' and Merchants' Bank of Huntsville, the Tombeckbe Bank, and the Bank of Mobile).<br><br> Several items are of particular interest. Two letters between Pickens and Governor William Carroll of Tennessee (dated June 6 and September 24, 1825), discuss the possibility of building a canals to connect the Hiwassee and Coosa Rivers and in the vicinity of Muscle Shoals on the Tennessee River. Another letter, dated May 14, 1825, was written by Creek Indian supporters of Chief William McIntosh, who describe McIntosh's murder and ask for increased protection for the tribe. Several items deal with the Vine and Olive Colony, including two certificates (dated 1817 and 1818) assigning land to French settlers. There are also letters and other documents related to the visit of General Marie Joseph Paul, Marquis de Lafayette, to Alabama in 1825. |
