description Fleming served as both a sergeant in the militia from Covington County, Alabama, and as a lieutenant in Company B of the 3rd Battalion Alabama Infantry Reserves; he spent time in Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, and Butlers Counties during the war. Most of the letters were sent by Fleming to his wife and daughter. In them, he discusses the conditions and stresses of camp life (writing in his first letter that "if there is a hell on earth it is at this place"); preparations made to protect Mobile, Alabama; the attack on Fort Morgan; news of mutual acquaintances; and his desire to hear from loved ones at home. Transcriptions are included for nine of the letters (for two of those, there are not original documents).
