description |
In the letter Bankhead explains the difficulty he has had getting an extension on the passport of Ida, Tallulah's English personal assistant. He succeeded because of his political connections: "I really had to go myself in person to get the matter attended to and it was because of the fact that the Commissioner of Immigration and I had served several terms together in Congress that I persuaded him to give me one more extension on the passport." This will be the last time the passport will be extended, however, because "there was very much complaint about aliens being allowed to remain in the United States indefinitely in gainful employment, thereby depriving american [sic] citizens of the work." |
