Parsons, a Unionist and lawyer in Talladega, Alabama, served briefly as the provisional governor from June to December 1865, and he was speaker of the state House of Representatives from 1872 to 1873 (he had also served in the House from 1859 to 1861 and from 1863 to 1865). Legal and business papers include contracts, memoranda, and case briefings; court documents verifying the testimony of witnesses; notices to defaulted account holders with the Alabama State Bank; paperwork for the exchange of power of attorney; and a statement of the educational funds distributed to counties in Alabama. Political papers include resolutions from Whig meetings in the late 1840s; resolutions dealing with the possibility of the separation of the North and the South; signed petitions; peace proposals for the Civil War; and election notices. |
