Summary: | These letters discuss the Strudwick, Sledge, and Holmes families' move to California in the 1860s; difficulties farming wheat in California; hardships experienced by the families in both California and Alabama; and Strudwick's disillusionment with the changes in Alabama during the Reconstruction period, particularly the newfound freedom of formerly enslaved persons.
