description The passage includes a letter from the Alliance to the editors of the Montgomery Advertiser, criticizing the newspaper for its apparent support of the "jute trust": "As an organization, the Alliance has entered the contest with the Jute Bagging monopoly with the determination to win. It has entered upon the war after careful premeditation, and proposes to fight it out on the issue offered by a robber to calmly and lawfully rob its members of millions...and the publication of your articles is regarded as the wilful [sic] effort of an accomplice to assist the robbers in the perpetration of the crime attempted by them." In 1888 the jute manufacturers had raised the price of jute bagging, which was used to bale cotton. Farmers were unable to afford the increase, so the Alliance organized a boycott against the material; by 1890 jute prices had lowered again.
