Description
Summary:These letters, written to family members and acquaintances, discuss personal relationships and social events; military activities and the home front during the Civil War; and everyday life during Reconstruction. (The correspondence is located in the administrative files of Peter A. Brannon, who was director of the Alabama Department of Archives and History from 1955 to 1967. Brannon's mother, Martha Stephen Greene Brannon, was the daughter of Stephen Clements Greene and Mattie Greene. Six years after Stephen's death, Mattie married her brother-in-law, Peter Alexander Greene; many of the letters here were written during their courtship. There are also several letters from Peter's first wife, Sarah Wharton Greene, written before her death in early 1865.)
