Description
Summary:In the passages Gorgas gives a brief history of yellow fever in the United States, particularly in the Mississippi Valley region, and discusses the economic impact of the disease. He then focuses on Cuba, which had suffered recurring epidemics since the mid-eighteenth century. Gorgas describes the effects of yellow fever on troops during the Spanish-American War; the discovery that the mosquito, rather than poor sanitation, spreads the disease; and his experiences as health officer in Havana after the war. Also included in these excerpts is correspondence between Gorgas and Dr. Walter Reed, in which the men discuss the eradication of yellow fever in Cuba.
