Description
Summary:Hicks, a native of Florida, moved to Jefferson County, Alabama, in 1922 to work for the Alabama Leghorn Farms Company. He was employed there for several years, after which he worked in coal mines, including the Gulf States Steel Company in Bessemer and the Woodward Iron Company in Mulga. In the early 1930s, he returned to the poultry industry, finding work on farms on Shades Mountain in Alabama, and Melbourne and Callahan, Florida. This diary contains daily entries, usually written in a humorous manner and including slang, euphemisms, and drawings. He describes his duties on the poultry farm; weather conditions; his health and diet; interactions with coworkers, family, and acquaintances; the death of President Warren G. Harding in August 1923; and his marriage to Ruth Henderson in September 1923. Also included are cutouts of photographs of Ruth and Hicks, as well as a photo of him with three fellow poultry farm workers (before the entry for January 21, 1924): Sebe Cones (an African American man); W. S. Owens, and D. Ottis Hays.
