Summary:In the letter William discusses sickness in the area; the death of a couple of relatives from the disease; and the unnecessary expense of current lifestyles: "We live in a world of exstravegancy [sic] of dress & eating which cant [sic] be kept up without mony [sic] now if it would become the pride of the human family to exsell [sic] each other in virtue morrels [sic] and a respectful intercourse with each other it would not cost so much mony and what a great diffrince [sic] of happiness & peace we would have to what we do under the course of life we now live under." He also comments on politics in the state, describing the current situation as a disease and comparing nullification to a pony ridden by the candidates in the last election: "...our candidates have a hard time this time the [sic] have no pony to ride this summer last year the had a fine fat pony in first rate trim nothing amiss with him--that was namd nullfier [sic]--now the have their own merrits [sic] which makes them ride dul [sic] and heavy the cant rain the war hoop now nor give much credit to thimselves [sic] as to merrit or talent--but time will prove all things perhaps when it is too late."
