Description
Summary:This heavily illustrated report was published to explain the need and plans for an extensive building program to be undertaken by the state in the early years after World War II. From the foreword: "Increased wartime revenues have made it possible for the State of Alabama to launch a building program on a scale without precedent in its history. Approximately $25,000,000 is now being devoted to providing sorely needed building at eleemosynary, educational, and other institutions. This building program was undertaken after a survey had shown that Alabama was 50 years behind its needs. In some instances, housing conditions for wards of the State had deteriorated to the point where they constituted a serious reflection upon its good name and humanitarian reputation. The construction program launched by the State Building Commission represents vastly more than any one administration has ever been able to accomplish before in the history of the State. The record shows that under provisions of the Building Commission act of 1945, more money is being put into public buildings than was expended for such purposes by the State for the entire period from 1907 to 1945, nearly 40 years."
