In the letter, Jacobs gives appreciation for Kilby's efforts to allow eligible women to vote in the general election on November 2, and she expresses disappointment at the outcome of the presidential race: "Being now a full-fledged voter, I merely want to say that my increased self-respect is due in part to your willingness to call the legislature together, and to your good offices in putting into effect legislation enabling the womanhood of Alabama to participate in the general election. I am more than ever thankful that I do not live in Georgia or Mississippi, whose Governors allowed those women to be the only ones in the United States still deprived of the vote. The Republican victor last Tuesday was too overwhelming! But to me, it simply means we Democrats must begin right now ,to organize and unite for 1924. I had hoped the women of the country could be reached in sufficient numbers to save the day, but it is difficult to conduct any campaign however righteous, without organization or funds. I know you were NEARLY as disappointed as I." |
