Summary: | The institute was designed to prepare aspiring educators for the state certification examination: "This school has been established to meet the growing demand of the teachers of East Alabama for opportunities to better prepare themselves for their life work without incurring much expense. It is a response too to the present peculiar conditions prevailing on account of the rigid system of examinations adopted by the state in order to secure a higher standard of teaching; as a result of this, a large per cent failed to obtain certificates at the recent examinations. It is necessary, for those who wish to obtain certificates, to take a more thorough course of instruction. Schools are closed because teachers cannot be found to supply them. This dearth of teachers is an incentive to ambitious young men and women to fit themselves for teaching; because they are assured that they will have no difficulty in securing schools and being well remunerated." |
