description |
The announcement gives the names of faculty members and graduates; recent attendance statistics, and information about the school's location, facilities, course of study, and regulations. Also included is a history of the institution (previously the Dallas Male and Female Academy), which, in addition to general facts and events, discusses the merits of free public education and the "opposition from good but mistaken men" in Selma: "Something of the old feeling against free education by the State still lingered in the minds of many, while it was argued that it was unjust to tax one man to educate another's children, and that the mixing of the children of the rich and the poor, the higher and the lower classes, would degrade and contaminate the former. When the question of taxation came to be submitted to the owners of real estate, a brisk war opened through the local papers upon the whole system." The history was written by Emily Ferguson, a teacher at the school. |
