The institution was operated by the United Presbyterian Church of North America, "the oldest of a group of six schools in Wilcox County under the Freedmen's Board of the United Presbyterian Church, having for their object the industrial, intellectual, moral and material improvement of the masses as well as the preparation of leaders."
