Judge Don Davis had closed the county's marriage license office on February 9, 2015, the day a federal court ruling striking down Alabama's same-sex marriage ban was to go into effect. After four couples were denied licenses, they appealed to U.S. District Judge Callie V. S. Granade, who ordered Judge Davis to comply immediately on February 12.
