People are carrying signs, including "I Was Raped Repeatedly Throughout My Childhood, and I Was Raped Again by HB314"; "Last Week: Bill 314 / Up Next: Bill 544 / Stay Informed / Call Your Senators"; "Don't Rule Women's Choices"; "Protect Women's Health!"; and "Never Again / Hangers are for Clothing." The event was held to protest Alabama's new abortion law (known as the Alabama Human Life Protection Act), which had been signed by Governor Kay Ivey the previous week. From the text of the act: "Relating to abortion; to make abortion and attempted abortion felony offenses except in cases where abortion is necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk to the unborn child's mother . . ." While the law stipulated that "a woman who receives an abortion will not be held criminally culpable or civilly liable for receiving the abortion," individuals performing (or attempting to perform) the procedure would be charged with a felony.
